Old Traditions and New Festivities On December 3rd, Somerset will be having a range of Christmas festivities in the downtown area.  You may already be familiar with the tree lighting ceremony and the parade that were on different days, but this year the events will be on the same day.  On top of having two of the most cherished Christmas traditions on one day now, you can also expect to see a showing of “It’s A Wonderful Life outdoors.” All those involved in making the day of Christmas activities are intent on keeping the Somerset traditions alive and well.  They have spent a lot of time planning the events to make it so you can enjoy an entire day...

Halloween Fun

It’s almost Halloween, and we could not be more excited.  In our household we absolutely love this holiday.  It is just so much fun for us to dress up and watch all of the neighborhood kids in their costumes go from door to door collecting goodies.  We host an annual Halloween party the Saturday before Halloween, so the festivities are always happening at our place. Somerset is keeping the festivities going on Halloween night too.  That Monday night the Police Department is hosting a Halloween event in the parking lot where you can get free glow sticks, pizza, and more.  This year the Halloween hours for the town are from 6-8 PM in order to keep everyone safe...

No Fireworks for The Fourth?

A firework-less fourth?  That is pretty much the case for right now in Somerset, unless you had the opportunity to hit up one of the many stands that were set up in town earlier this week.  If not, you might just miss out.  The new changes to the firework laws in Kentucky meant that we would have access to more “powerful” fireworks that have not been available in this state for this year’s Fourth of July, but the vendors in the town apparently did not do all of their firework homework, unfortunately for us. Just yesterday there were several complaints that were called in that firework stands all over Somerset were not set up to legally sell fireworks...

The Big Flood

I was not alive during the time of forty days and nights of rain, but I have a pretty good idea of what it may have looked like. I live just a few miles away from the Mississippi River near where the Ohio River converges into it. The water in these rivers and their tributaries are at the highest points they have ever seen in recorded history. When you add to that the fact that the entire region saw rainfall in excess of twenty inches last month, I’m sure you can only imagine the amount of damage that has been done.
